Ratri is a 4th zen god and the goddess of night.[1]
Appearance
Ratri resembles a young woman with pale skin. She has dark grey short hair with similarly colored eyes. She wears a skin-tight shirt that covers up to her mouth. She wears tights pants of a similar color with a slightly lighter skirt with a slit on one side. She also usually wears two silver earrings in the shape of moons, along with a long cape with a hood that she keeps on.
Personality
Ratri has a loyal and somewhat gentler personality than most gods, showing sympathy to Agni's betrothed and even blessing said soul against the wishes of the god realm.[1] Her loyalty to Ushas is also commendable, with her choosing to stay in the human realm and help rescue rakshasas at Ushas' request even if it angered her.[2]
She is remains an alert and distrustful individual, wanting to leave the human realm as soon as she heard rumors of potential danger with fiendish magic. She also questioned Garuda's actions more than Ushas when it came to Aruna, and she was the only one to notice Maruna following them.[2]
Skills and Abilities
As a 4th-Zen Ratri is a highly powerful god.
Spatial Generation (unnamed/unseen): Ratri is stated to be able to create a 'hidden area' through a transcendental.[2]
Element Creation (unnamed): Ratri is capable of surrounding herself with dark elemental energy when she prepares to fight, as she did when she confronted Maruna.[3]
Plot
Season 3
Chapter 47: Words That Never Reached You
Ratri blesses Agni's betrothed
(16) When the gods destroyed the souls of the ancient human race and sent curse upon curse onto the soul of Brilith, which they could not destroy because of her betrothal with Agni, Ratri was among the few who sympathized with Agni and blessed the soul, as she states that without Agni present they should do the best they can to help.
Ushas and Ratri arrive to the human realm
Chapter 53: Ananta
(3) Ratri, accompanied by Ushas, arrives in the human realm at the request of Garuda and Vinata to train their son Aruna. Surprised by the lack of nastikas, Ratri wonders what the Garuda king is thinking.
(4) Ratri is introduced to Aruna by Pallav, with Ratri remaining quiet during this process. She prepares to generate a hidden area to witness Aruna's skill, before being informed of his lack of vigor. As she witnesses the rakshasa's behavior, Ratri comments that Aruna's personality is as unique as his transcendental. A week later, Ratri addresses her concerns to Ushas, as rumors surrounding fiendish magic have begun to fly around. Ratri is tempted to return to the god realm, but Ushas convinces her otherwise. Over time, Ratri begins to notice that someone is following them.
Ratri rescues the Garudas
A storm begins to rage on. Pallav returns, informing them that the storm is not of natural causes and they have been told to evacuate. Ratri wishes to return to the god realm, but Ushas once again convinces her to stay and help get the rakshasas to safety. After getting informed that Aruna is not with the others, Ratri heads out of the water channels with Ushas and Pallav to find him.
Ratri agrees to help save Aruna
(5) They eventually find Aruna, who has died from being hit by the lightning. When Pallav asks if there is a way to save him, Ratri explains there is no way to revive a rakshasa, otherwise the sura clans would all have many 5th stages. Ratri decides to help once Ushas begins to cry and blames herself for the incident. She passes the corpse over to her, telling both her and Pallav to take Aruna's body to a place where the light of Dawn can reach him.
Ratri and Maruna
Now alone Ratri calls out to Maruna, as she can sense him nearby. She questions if he was following them to harm Aruna, and questions why he is holding Aruna's soul. As Maruna explains himself. Ratri is confused that Ananta was here. Taking Aruna's soul, she realizes that Maruna is a time traveling version of Aruna, stating that she will have to listen to Chandra when she gets back. She passes on her cape to Maruna, telling him to head to Taitalika through the water channel as he should not be in the same realm as his younger self. She then asks him for his name, and when he doesn't answer, asks for a name to give the revived Aruna, to which he answers, hence naming his younger self Maruna.
Ratri explains to the gods what happened to Ushas
(7) Ratri arrives to the gods' meeting with baby Ushas. She calls out to Chandra, stating she needs to talk to him in private. As the two attempt to leave, Indra gets angry telling them to explain what happened to him directly.
(8) As Indra's anger continues to escalate, the gods turn to Ratri to explain how Ushas has given up her power, as this must have been a voluntary process due to her current status.
Side Story 17 - Dawn of the Gods
Ratri with baby Ushas
(1) As the created gods question why Ushas is so young and not growing, Ratri and Chandra are both in adult forms and listening in. Ratri turns to Chandra and asks him if he knows anything, to which he only responds that he has a guess. Ratri is the only one who remained by Ushas's side over time, due to their close origins. When Ratri was busy, she would pass on Ushas to other important gods. When Ushas cried to go see Agni, Yama denied them access as Agni still had not mastered his powers. Ushas grew a liking to Yama, over time, Ratri tried to keep her away but Ushas would always return to Yama's side even on her own.
Chapter 55: Kubera and Kubera
Ratri in the sura realm
(21) In N23, Ratri is one of the gods working towards killing Yuta. In the sura realm, she reports to Indra that the Asura clan is ready and that Ravana has set out for his post. Soon after, Ratri looks over to the group of gods gathered and notices that Marut is not among them.
(24) Ratri reports that everyone available searched for Marut but could not find her, meaning she is either dead or missing. When Indra says they can just replace Marut with a 3rd-Zen, Ratri points out that Marut is the only 4th-Zen with a destruction attribute. As Pushan panics, Ratri reminds her that she is a 4th-Zen and should calm down.
(27) Now standing in to charge the 'device' as part of Brahma's plan, Ratri is standing in for two attributes. Ratri calms down Pushan who is stressing out as she hears that gods are dying as part of the process. As Pushan questions the plan, Ratri says it's best for the lower zen gods to give their power as it allows the 5th-zens to better react in case of an emergency. When Pushan reveals that death and power loss here are permanent, Ratri is bewildered and questions her. As Pushan begins to lose her form, Ratri tries to calm her down as Kubera arrives interrupting their conversation.
Chapter 56: The Finite
Pushan, Ratri, and Asvins
(1) After Kubera causes the collapse of the Sura Realm, Ratri escapes on the back of an Asura clan sura along with Asvins and Pushan. Pushan questions whether Ratri had regained the power she had put in earlier, with the goddess of night saying it's too early to tell. They run into Varuna who tells them to use their transcendentals and return to the God Realm, as she plans to fill the Sura Realm with endless water. After returning to the God Realm, Ratri is in attendance as Brahma tells all the gods present to aid in the resurrection of Ananta, and anyone who does so will be allowed to cross to the next universe.
Notes
- Due to the nature of her jurisdiction, along with her standing in for two gods in Brahma's plan, it is likely that Ratri has darkness and sky as attributes.
